Walk into a traditional outdoor retailer and you can be faced with a wall of products that all appear to do much the same thing. Search online and the choice becomes almost endless. Every product promises to be lighter, stronger, faster or more advanced than the last.

More choice should make buying easier. Often, it does the opposite.

At the other end of the spectrum, direct-to-consumer brands offer a much narrower range, but only from their own product line. That can simplify the decision, although it does not always give you the best solution for every job.

We believe there is a better way.

One or two good answers

Field Essentials is the Project 6•S7N approach to cycling and outdoor kit: a focused collection of products that we create ourselves or carefully select from makers we trust. These products represent, in our opinion, the best of breed in each category.

We don't want to offer ten multi-tools, eight saddlebags, or a page full of products separated by tiny differences. Our aim is to give you one or two genuinely good choices for each job, with a clear explanation of why each one deserves its place.

One might be the best option for an everyday gravel ride. A second might earn its place for longer, more remote adventures. If two products do not serve meaningfully different needs, we do not need both.

It is less about building the biggest range and more about making the right decisions before a product ever reaches the store.

Every Field Essential in the "Trusted by Us Range" must do more than look good on a product page.

We use the kit ourselves, on the terrain and in the conditions it is intended for. That means local rides from Edinburgh, long days on Scottish gravel, wet forest roads, exposed tracks, event weekends and multi-day adventures where space is limited and reliability matters.

We consider how a product performs, how easily it packs and whether it works as part of a complete ride setup. We look at durability, repairability, weight, value and ease of use.

Most importantly, we ask one simple question:

Would we carry it ourselves?

If the answer is no, it does not become a Field Essential Product in the "Trusted by Us Range".

Every item has to earn its place

Space on a bike is precious. So is your money. We want every item to work hard enough to justify both.

That does not always mean choosing the lightest product or the most expensive one. It means selecting the product that does its job properly, is straightforward to use and can be relied upon when conditions change or plans unravel.

Some Field Essentials will come from established specialists who already make the right product. Others will be developed by Project 6•S7N when we believe there is an opportunity to make something simpler, more useful or better suited to the way we ride.

In both cases, the standard remains the same: purposeful, dependable and ready to be used.

A collection that stays considered

The Trusted by Us Range of Field Essentials will never be a catalogue filled for the sake of appearing complete.

The collection will grow carefully as we test new products, build relationships with trusted makers we have used for years, and learn from the riders who join our community and adventures. If something better becomes available, we will test it. If a product no longer meets our standard, we will reconsider its place.

We will also be honest about the differences between the options we offer, including who each product is for and when you may not need it. Our role is not simply to sell more kit. It is to help you choose well.
